Data Governance

Northern Arizona University’s Office of Data Governance

The Data Governance initiative at Northern Arizona University was launched in the Fall of 2016, with the primary goal to improve the accuracy, consistency, and availability of quality data and information. NAU’s Data Governance model demonstrates the ultimate owners of NAU data are the Arizona Board of Regents, NAU’s President, and NAU’s Executive Team. Various Data Governance Advisory Committees have been strategically developed to provide guidance through the involvement of functional areas from across the university. Security, communication, and collaboration between teams are keys to ensuring all aspects of data management, technology, and web/digital strategy are being used to effectively advance strategic initiatives and institutional improvement.

Data governance training

NAU’s Office of Data Governance aims to provide relevant and timely training for NAU faculty and staff. Training sessions are developed by functional experts from across the university, and focus on topics suggested by faculty, staff, and the Data Governance Trustees. Data Governance training is intended to serve as a supplement to existing training offered by other offices at NAU. Training sessions may be offered in-person, via Skype, or through self-paced web modules.

Conducting a survey

Advance approval must be obtained from the Survey Review Committee for all surveys that will be administered to 1,000 or more Northern Arizona University Community Members. All such surveys must be conducted in accordance with the standards and requirements set forth in this policy. Institutional Review Board approval is also necessary prior to conducting human research projects. Both approvals may be sought concurrently. Tribal consultation is mandatory for surveys that target populations from a federally recognized Native American sovereign nation.
